I grew up thinking the “life of the mind” was the top one could aspire to. Intellectual for me was a compliment, not a bad word. “Fatti non foste a viver come bruti, ma per seguir virtute e canoscenza” Dante made Ulysses say in the XXVI book of the Inferno in the Divine Comedy. “ You were not made to live like brutes, but to pursue virtue and knowledge.”
